More on Realm of Shadow
Realm of Shadow began as a home Halloween haunt maze over 10 years ago. Creator Ron Love and his wife, Debbie, first created a simple graveyard decoration on their front patio, that soon grew to an over 1800 square foot enclosed haunted house. It has now taken over the rear parking lot at Trinity Christian School and Trinity Lutheran Church in Norwalk giving them even more space to work with.
In 2019, Realm of Shadow has earned praise for their experience at Midsummer Scream: Temple of the Fallen God. A high concept, Indiana Jones style adventure (with a lengthy backstory, this miniature haunt promised a family friendly, exciting adventure through a lost Jungle. Atop the haunt sat a golden snake statue that occasionally produced a dazzling laser show that could be seen throughout the Midsummer Scream Hall of Shadows. While openly a family-friendly production, many guests were surprised to find some of the most effective jump scares of the whole convention.
Realm of Shadow bills itself as an all-ages production, and anyone age 10 or older may go through the haunt without the safety of an adult (though the website correctly asserts that it’s more fun to see your parents scream!). The creators promise an experience free of blood and guts, instead preferring to build tension and fear in more unique ways.
Notably, the Realm of Shadow team uses their haunt both as a community service and as a way to share a Christian message. Religious themes do not play a direct role in the haunt itself, its creators express their intent to “pass out the “good candy,” along with a memorable Christian gospel message to each and every visitor. It is our joy to scare you to death, and tell you about real Life, all at the same time.”
The haunt typically runs for the last few days of October, and the theme changes each year. Ever since their jump from yard display to home haunt to haunted house, Realm of Shadow has been growing quickly in quality and ambition.
