At La Jolla Playhouse, he designed Queens, Tiger Style!, Waking La Llorona (2017 WOW Festival), Liz Lerman’s Healing Wars (2015 WOW Festival) 2015 and The Darrell Hammond Project. His other regional scenic and costume design credits include The Old Globe, American Repertory Theater, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, Lyric Stage and Gloucester Stage, among many others. He is the recipient of the Elliot Norton Award in Costume Design and a multiple nominee for the IRNE and BroadwayWorld awards.
Past Shows:
Waking La LLorona – In 2017, Optika Moderna presented Waking La Llorona, a multisensory immersive theatre experience inspired by one of Mexico’s most legendary tales.
In this fully immersive, multisensory experience, audience members embarked upon an individual journey through a dream-like world, passing through a sequence of intimate and powerful phantasmagoric one-on-ones. The piece was a haunting and compassionate reflection upon the Mexican folk legend of La Llorona (“the weeping woman”), doomed to wander the earth in search of her drowned children.
Las Quinceañeras – The mysterious Optika Moderna opened its doors once again after years of secrecy and seclusion, inviting participants to undergo their latest procedure “Proyecto (15)” or Las Quinceañeras. Las Quinceañeras premiered October 2019 at Without Walls Festival. This surreal, immersive, multisensory experiences explored the famed rite of passage undertaken by many Latinas on their 15th birthday. Adventurous audiences booked an appointment to meet with Optika Moderna’s staff of trained paranormal opticians. Within the lab, patients experienced a hallucinogenic journey into the early 1990s as they relived the fateful events surrounding the celebrations of multiple Quinceañeras.
