If you’ve been paying any sort of attention to Instagram lately, you might’ve seen pictures and posts from a hypercolor dreamscape in New Mexico. But this is more than just the litany of ‘Grammable pop-up experiences littering the landscape of pop culture over the last few years or so. The creatively named Meow Wolf (which literally came from random words chosen from a hat) is an art collective that doesn’t dabble in fear so much as it does in wonder. Their website touts the experience as “a combination of jungle gym, haunted house, children’s museum and immersive art exhibit,” in which guests can come face to…well, knee with an enormous robot, or traverse into a multiverse by way of a portal inside of a refrigerator. Guests can interact with all manner of pieces inside Meow Wolf without fear of jump scares, as it doesn’t appear to house any sort of live actors, but it’s probably wise to go in with an open mind, expecting the unexpected at every turn. Meow Wolf, which operates by way of private investors as well as state and city-provided funding, is currently only open in Santa Fe, with projected plans over the next few years to open similarly mind-bending locations in Las Vegas, Denver, Washington, D.C. and Phoenix.

Their first permanent installation, the THEA Award-winning House of Eternal Return, launched in March 2016 with support from Game of Thrones creator, George R.R. Martin. Inside, guests discover a multidimensional mystery house with secret passages, portals to magical worlds, and an expansive narrative amidst surreal, maximalist, and mesmerizing art exhibits. Located in Santa Fe, HOER features a children’s learning center, a cafe and bar, and a highly-rated music venue.
