PERFORMANCE THEATER
Performance Theater: The audience is a passive watcher whose presence or absence doesn’t alter the narrative in any way, and they are often separated by the stage.
Actors perform for audiences – and the story does not involve the audience in any way. Thus, there is no interactivity, no agency, and no movement for the audience – they are passive in this experience.
Browse the company guide below to find traditional performance theater that might interest you. Scroll to the bottom to find our intensity guide.
Due to the separation of audience and actor by the stage, traditional performance theater often falls in lower intensity categories such as levels 0 and 1. These can range from musicals to dramas to parodies to comedies. However, Zombie Joe’s Underground is a blackbox theater with a stage that often breaks this classification; their Urban Death: Tour of Terror pushes the boundaries of actor nudity, controversial subject matter, and scares, earning it level 5 intensity while never touching the audience.
