Situated in a beautiful, multi-story building in the Mission in San Francisco, groups of ten participants will join an intimate collection of strangers and face their own death in an immersive, participatory experience. Participants in “Second Chance” are guided throughout the experience and deeply explore the question: What if facing our death allowed us to live more fully?
The two hour long journey includes virtual reality, lighting design, art, theater, acrobats, discussions and live instrumentation. There will be tactile interaction, facilitated conversations, and tea served in cups made with human ashes.
“Second Chance” is brought to life by an impressive team including: co-producers Roxanna Shohadaee, Scott Shigeoka, and Melinda Lauw; virtual reality from Kelly Vicars, Lindsay Saunders, Aaron Yip, and Liisa Laukkanen; lighting design by Robb Pope; set and scenic design by Treigh Love and Dayna Gilbert; and a soundscape from Yoko Sen. There are more than 50 San Francisco Bay Area artists involved, including members of the ReImagine team. Being also very community and safety minded, the team work with end of life doulas, trained facilitators, and counselors.
Second Chance is an anchor event for “ReImagine: End of Life”. ReImagine will be in San Francisco, 16-22 April, and in New York, 27-3 November, and “showcases the diversity and creativity of our community, considering death and celebrating life from every angle. We hope to take a 360-degree look at this universal topic and provide a way in for everyone.” For more information on the ReImagine programme of events, visit their website.
