MacDevitt Manor 2023 – Midnight Circus

Last year, MacDevitt Manor created an entire witch’s grotto that amazed us—and we knew we had to make the drive out this year. Replacing the witchy theme is Midnight Circus, a clown infested sideshow filled with manic laughter, demonic clowns, and creatures hidden in the depth of the dark. This is a darker take on the usual bright and colorful clowns. More subdued in nature, MacDevitt Manor 2023 is meant to scare – and it achieves that.

MacDevitt Manor is a home haunt in West Covina that creates gorgeous, cinema style sets that impress and delight with a new theme and set each and every year. MacDevitt Manor 2023 welcomes guests into the Midnight Circus. This larger-than-life circus façade houses deranged clowns, spectral acrobats, and ghostly sideshow performers who have all emerged this Halloween for one final sinister show. It’s a five-minute long linear walkthrough haunt focused on jump-scares from the actors. The location is dimly lit, with often only the flicker of a single bulb lighting the way. This is a circus long closed down and now haunted by the ghosts of the past.

MacDevitt Manor 2023 is easy to see from the street. With it’s massive clown face façade, mouth open, ready to consume those brave enough to enter, this home haunt can easily achieve longer lines with eager guests. A ticket booth will ask for a donation to enter, and from there, the light goes out and the laughter begins.

Similar to last year’s review, the actors here are numerous and passionate. Chanting “Midnight Circus, Midnight Circus” can be heard from rooms over. The ones you can see dance to the flicker of the candle, disappearing and reappearing, jump-scaring participants from all angles.

The circus tent at MacDevitt Manor 2023 is gorgeously designed. From the massive circus posters, to the fortune teller booth, to the carnival games, this feels like it was an operating circus at one time. But it’s clearly not active, and the clowns and creatures inside are not even trying to pose as the operators of this circus. It’s eerie and unsettling, like a backrooms infested by circus folk.

MacDevitt Manor 2023 is easily one of the most visually stunning haunted houses we’ve ever been to. With many actors filling its halls, each brimming with passion and excitement, this is a haunt that is infectious with its spirit and its fear. Clowns are popular this year (actually, every year), and MacDevitt Manor 2023 finds a way to make these spectral anomalies stand out from the crowd. We applaud them for their work—and we will be back for the new theme next year.
