Staying in a Haunted House? Here’s How to Keep the Fear at Bay

While some people might not be able to think of anything much more exciting than staying in a haunted house, others might not be able to think of anything worse. If staying in a haunted house is something that fills you with a feeling of dread, then heading into an attraction like this might feel impossible. But you don’t want to be the only one that runs out half way through or decides to wait outside. While you might not be able to make it through feeling completely calm and fearless, there are a few tips and tricks that you can use to survive the scary experience and make it all the way through to the end.
 

Don’t Dwell on Your Fears

When you’re heading to do something scary, the build up to the event can often feel worse than the event itself. The anxious thoughts that you will have before you go into a haunted house can leave you feeling even worse, and they might not even be real – you’re simply guessing what it might be like in there. Instead of letting yourself dwell on your fears and getting freaked out before you go in, remind yourself that you’re going into a staged situation and will be with other people who can keep you safe the whole way through the experience. It might help to do something fun and light-hearted before you go into the haunted house to take your mind off it, like watching a funny TV show or playing some online casino games. It’s a good idea to take somebody that you know well and are comfortable around, so you won’t feel embarrassed if you scream in front of them or if you ask to hold their hand. Take Deep Breaths

When you’re inside the haunted house, taking deep breaths can help you stay calmer and more relaxed. When we are scared, physical changes happen in the body including flushed skin, a faster heart rate, and problems thinking clearly. All of this can actually leave you feeling even more anxious than before. If you notice that your heart is beating fast, your hands are getting shaky or you are feeling clammy and warm, take a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth to help slow your heart rate down and calm yourself down.
 

Remind Yourself It’s Not Real

Haunted houses can definitely feel very real, but most of the time you’re not going to encounter any real ghosts or other scary entities. As scary as it might feel when you are inside, it’s a good idea to keep reminding yourself that nothing inside is actually as real as it feels right now. They’re just good actors in costumes, and everything is in place for you to have fun. In fact, being scared is all part of the fun! If you get too scared, just keep reminding yourself that it’s all pretend, and you’re okay.
 

Ask to Go Outside

If it all gets too much for you, you can always ask a member of staff to let you go outside for a while to calm down and get yourself thinking straight again. It’s okay if you hit your breaking point while you are inside the haunted house and you will usually have a member of staff with you who can help you get to the nearest exit and go outside for some fresh air and a few deep breaths. You can do this if you get too freaked out or have a panic attack. Some places will let you go back in once you feel ready to, while others might not let you back in once you go out but remember that there is no shame in leaving an attraction early if you’re struggling to handle it or if it’s not fun for you any longer.
 

Plan Something Fun for Afterwards

Planning something fun for after your visit to the haunted house is a good idea since it gives you something fun to look forward to you, which can help you avoid dwelling on the scares and freaking yourself out once you have finished the visit. It can also help you feel better as you are in the haunted house since you can remind yourself of what you have planned for afterwards and that you’re not going to be stuck in the haunted house for ever.
 

Dress to Blend In

If you want to avoid the biggest scares at the haunted house, then dressing in all black can help since this means that you’re not going to stand out as much to the actors. Wear something like a black t-shirt, dark jeans, and some comfortable trainers or shoes. This can make it harder for the actors to spot you and can also make you seem like less of a newbie to haunted houses, which might discourage the actors from targeting you.
 

Expect Scares

Being caught off-guard is probably the worst thing about the scares in a haunted house, so be ready for them. When you are in a haunted house you can usually assume that there is going to be a scare every time you turn the corner, so if you’re already expecting it, it won’t be quite as shocking.

Haunted houses can be a lot of fun, but also really scary. Keep these tips in mind to keep yourself calm so you can enjoy the experience.
