Designing the perfect poster this Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner, so you’ll need to promote your Halloween party with some posters. Here are top design tips from the pros to make posters that stand out.

Designing posters may seem easy, but when you get down to it, it’s challenging to start from scratch. Unless you have a graphic designer on your team, you’ll have to consider many factors when crafting the perfect Halloween poster. If you have no idea about designing, we recommend using an online graphic design tool and a pre-built Halloween template to make your life easier.

But even then, a perfect poster is a balance of several things. It includes many components, such as visuals, text, font, colors, and high-quality images. The key is to know how to bring in all those elements and make them sing in unison. In this blog post, we’ll discuss some design tips you must keep in mind while designing your Halloween poster.

Identify your goal

The first thing you should do is identify what you need a poster for. Are you throwing a Halloween party, and what to spread the word in your neighborhood? Or are you a company offering hefty discounts this Halloween? Whatever the case, your poster should serve your purpose.

In both cases, your poster should look stunning, but in the latter case, you should pay attention to your target audience. Ask yourself, does the poster target customer pain points? Does it reflect your brand identity? Does it convey your marketing message at a glance?

Structure your Halloween poster

This is a no-brainer — your poster should have an overarching structure. The heading goes on top and must have a big font so that it’s visible from afar and conveys to the reader the purpose of the poster. For instance, the heading could read “Winter Apparel 20% Off This Halloween.”

Next, comes the blend of visuals and textual information. Beneath the header, you must insert relevant images. If you’re offering discounts on your winter apparel, you should show some pictures of the items on sale. Make sure the pictures are high-quality and crisp, something that readers might be tempted to buy after looking at your poster. And lastly, include all relevant details about the discount offer, such as the valid until date, your store location, etc.

Fonts and colors make all the difference

We’ve rarely seen a Halloween poster without a black background. That’s because black indicates the night and sets the theme for Halloween, so in our opinion, you should go with a black or dark-colored background for your poster. As for the heading, it should contrast with the dark background, so crimson red or yellow would be suitable. Keep the discount or any other text that follows in white so it’s easily visible to the reader.

Aside from colors, you should pick an appropriate font for your poster. Going with Arial or Sans Serif isn’t a good idea. Make the font creepy to fit the Halloween theme. As for the rest of the text, you could use the same antique font or a regular one — that’s up to you. The bottom line is you should ensure that when you take a step back and look at the overall poster, it should look seamless and consistent throughout.

Alignment is key to consistency

Perhaps the most crucial thing for your Halloween poster to look consistent is the overall alignment. Make sure you set equal margins on your poster, and all the elements (text, images, and other visuals) should be within those margins and be aligned with one another. For example, if you insert images of winter apparel on discount, make sure the pics are aligned in a straight line. Otherwise, it will look disarrayed and ugly.

You have limited real estate on a poster, so you might be tempted to fill it up as much as possible, but when it comes to posters, less is more. Keep it minimalist, and don’t flood your poster with too many details. That will make it easier to read and digest for the reader. You need to have blank spaces between the headline, the images section, and the text for better continuity.

A final piece of advice

While the above are some of the basic tips you must keep in mind, crafting a poster from scratch can be difficult, especially for beginners. To save you time, we recommend using an online graphic design tool like PosterMyWall, which has several pre-built Halloween poster templates, to create your poster in a few clicks. All you need to do is pick a template and customize your poster to how you like it with the platform’s online drag-and-drop tool — it’s that easy. Lastly, remember to experiment. Create 2 or 3 designs and ask people which one they think is the best one.
