Cornfields and haunted houses are a pair made in heaven… or well, hell. The tall stalks, isolate guests from the outside world, block out any lights, and give scare actors infinite dark recesses to hide in. For those who’ve haunted across the Midwest and East Coast, you’re familiar. From the Cornfield of Terror in New Jersey to Putnam County’s Haunted Cornfield in Ohio to Terror in the Corn in Colorado, there are numerous offerings. But in Southern California, cornfields are a rare commodity. Enter Frosty’s Forest Christmas Trees and Pumpkin Patch with a prime cornfield. Now, Chino has one of the best CA haunted cornfield mazes.

To accomplish this, The Fleshyard Haunted House teamed up with Perdition Home Haunt this year to bring to life a classic walk-through haunt in a giant corn maze at Frosty’s Forest Christmas Trees & Pumpkin Patch. This haunt is an absolute pleasure; it takes roughly fifteen to twenty minutes to walk through depending on your speed—and groups are spaced out to ensure that you feel eerily alone within the corn. There are a few one-room locations you’ll enter momentarily as you go, they only serve to provide some theming that differentiates The Fleshyard and Perdition Home from the corn surrounding it. While Covid precautions are in place (all actors and guests must always wear masks and the haunt takes place entirely outdoors), this maze would have fit right in during any Halloween season.

While the Fleshyard and Perdition Home took over the cornfield maze, they definitely made it feel theirs. With build-outs of themed rooms scattered throughout the maze, you’ll experience haunt classics so wonderfully decorated and acted that you may forget we’re still in a pandemic. Ranging from clowns with an ice cream truck, to a medical room with gurneys and doctors, to a demented family living room, the rooms may seem a bit disconnected, but are all scary. However, it is clear that some of the rooms do further the storyline of the Kearny Family Farm, the origin story for The Fleshyard that is the through line each year.

Expect some good scares too. The mixture of the natural settings and the use of classic haunt build-outs give the actors plenty to work with, and they use it. The scariest parts was walking down a pitch-black corridor of corn, lit only by the moon above, and then having an actor jump out from darkness to our side. It was perfect. Further, by spacing out parties, conga-lines are not an issue here and you won’t even hear the scares happening in front of you or behind you. They do a great job of ensuring that each party feels like they are the only one in the maze and that all actors are coming just for you.

Frosty’s Forest Christmas Trees & Pumpkin Patch also offers more than one of the best CA haunted cornfield mazes. We recommend getting there early and picking out a pumpkin, playing some carnival games, petting the zoo animals, taking some fall pictures, and exploring the two other corn mazes on the property. One of these is a 4-acre corn maze designed to look like Alice in Wonderland and the Cheshire Cat from an aerial view. This maze has no actors, but can be equally as frightening as left and right turns begin to blur and you get lost in the maze. The other is a photography path with numerous stations where you can take pictures, ranging from a large dragon, to a buff Frankenstein’s monster, to a rampaging T-Rex. Go with friends and bring your camera, these are a blast to take photos with and remember the evening.

The Fleshyard and Perdition Home have created something truly frightening by teaming up with Frosty’s Forest Pumpkin Patch in Chino to create one of the best CA haunted cornfield mazes. This is one of the best values for a haunt out there too, as the cost of the ticket also includes entrance and access to the pumpkin patch, petting zoo, carnival games, and more corn mazes. So, for those who are willing to venture out of their vehicles, this haunt makes it feel like it’s the Halloween of years past. Let’s just hope you find your way out of the maze alive.
