What do We Mean by ‘Immersivity’ in Video Production?

There are a lot of terms and concepts in video production that can be confusing for beginners. Some of these refer to technical aspects of the process, while others are more theoretical and concerned with the way in which we perceive and react to video content.

If you’re exploring the world of video production, you might come across the concept of immersivity. What does this actually mean? We dive into the topic in the guide below. Read on to learn more.

What Does Immersivity Mean?

To be immersed in something means to be deeply involved with it. We often hear of being literally immersed in water, or metaphorically immersed in a particularly riveting book.

When it comes to the medium of video, what do we mean by immersivity? Have you ever watched a film or TV show and been completely captured, to the point that you are temporarily unaware of what is happening around you in the real world? That is immersivity.

We’ve all experienced it. It can happen during an intense car-chase scene in an action movie, or at the end of a drama when everything comes to a head. You become lost in what you’re watching, fully transported into the world you see on the screen before you.

Viewers can be immersed by narrative, by visuals or by the performance of an actor. Often, it’s a combination of everything that captures the attention and imagination of the audience.

How Do Viewers Respond to Immersivity?

Immersivity is the ultimate goal of anyone who makes videos. It doesn’t matter if it’s a blockbuster Hollywood film or a YouTube video, immersion is what it’s all about.

Why is immersivity so important? It’s all about how the viewer responds. Immersive video experiences are more engaging and enjoyable for audiences. They will connect to the content they are seeing on a deeper, more meaningful level. Viewing becomes an active process, rather than a passive one, with the emotions of audiences in play.

A viewer is immersed in a video, they are going to be able to absorb, process and understand the information that is being conveyed to them much more efficiently. In films, this can mean they can follow the plot more easily and relate to characters more readily.

Immersivity isn’t just important for films. Say, for example, you are making a documentary with talking heads and stock video. By ensuring viewers are immersed in what they’re watching you’ll be able to deliver your message and information with greater efficacy. Audiences will come away having learned something and will be more likely to retain the knowledge the documentary gave them.

Now that we know what immersivity in video is, how audiences respond to it and why it’s so important, how can you make your own videos more immersive? Read on to find out.

Visuals

If you want to immerse audiences in your video, visuals are the first thing you need to focus on. Technology today means we can record footage in extremely high quality, and the devices we use to watch videos are capable of displaying high resolutions with fantastic clarity.

However, this has bred expectations among today’s consumers. High-definition video has become the norm, and if your video is anything less than perfect it’s going to be extremely difficult to engage and immerse your viewers.

Thankfully, you don’t need to splash out on an expensive camera to get the kind of image quality modern viewers demand. You can get fantastic results with a smartphone, but it’s important you understand how to properly light, compose and frame your shots.

Post-production treatment is important too. Use an editing platform to polish off your video and give it the finishing touches it needs to look its best.

Audio

While visuals are incredibly important, they should never come at the expense of the audio in your video. Audio is often overlooked but is in fact just as important or even more important than visuals when it comes to immersivity.

This is particularly crucial if your video contains dialogue or speech of any kind. If audiences can’t hear or understand what is being said, they will never be truly immersed in the experience, and you will be unable to deliver your intended message.

When recording audio such as character dialogue or a voiceover, do so in a quiet, enclosed environment where any external or background noise is at an absolute minimum. If you are using music and sound effects, ensure that these don’t clash with the dialogue.

Conclusion

Immersivity is all about captivating your audience. Immersing your viewers will make the experience more enjoyable for them and will ensure your video delivers the messages and information you want it to. Visuals are extremely important when making an immersive video, but audio is vital as well. Immersion is a multi-sensory experience, you ensure you take this into account when making videos.
