It is believed that the Bloody Chapel is haunted by the spirit of this priest.

Another horror story revolves around the ‘Oubliette’ of the Bloody Chapel. Many prisoners were flung in there to die. The mercenaries hired by the O’Carroll family to carry out this task included the MacMahon clan and the O’Neil clan. They were poisoned when their objective was achieved. Thanks to such spine-chilling tales, many spirits are believed to spook this castle.

 

Chillingham Castle, England

Considered Britain’s most spooked castle, Chillingham Castle also has a suitable name. It was the venue for prisoners being dumped into dungeons and tortured to death in torture chambers. It is now home to many spirits such as the pantry’s frail “white lady,” the forever-lonely Lady Mary Berkeley, and the whimpering “blue boy,”.

Houska Castle, Czech Republic

Just an hour away from Prague, Houska Castle doesn’t have any defensive wall or kitchen. It didn’t even have any occupants at the time it was built. But it does have something unique within its walls. No other castle in the world has a large hole in its ground! Legend has it that this hole is a gateway to Hell!

It is believed that Houska was built over this seemingly endless hole to lock the gateway to Hell. This would also keep creatures from the Underworld from entering our world. The lower walls are believed to be holding the demonic creatures!

 

Moosham Castle, Austria

Hundreds of men and women were accused of witchcraft between 1675 and 1690 during the Salzburg Witch Trials. Many of these accused were imprisoned, tortured, and executed at Moosham Castle. Many cattle and deer were found dead near the castle in the following century.

It created such havoc in society that residents were investigated and killed, as they were considered werewolves. Fast forward to the present, staff and visitors often hear thudding sounds, see footprints and white mists, and feel like someone is breathing on them.

 

Voergaard Castle, Denmark

Dronninglund is a town In the northeast of Denmark. It is home to Voergaard Castle, known for having the works of El Greco, Goya, and Raphael on display for the public. However, this beautiful castle also witnessed a disturbing event.

Among the myths, the most popular one is about Ingeborg Skeel. He is said to have bought the marvellous castle in 1578. He was so proud of his acquisition that he didn’t want anybody else to own such a piece of beauty. To help achieve his goal, he drowned the architect in the moat.

 

Predjama Castle, Slovenia

The Predjama Castle is built inside a cave in the middle of a soaring cliff. The impressive Predjama Castle was constructed in 1274.

This castle once belonged to a knight named Erazem Lueger. Equipped with secret passageways, Predjama Castle was once a venue of torture and treachery. Legend says that Lueger’s servants deceived him and murdered him in the castle. Hence, he is believed to haunt the castle to this day.

 

Himeji Castle, Japan

Constructed in 1333, Himeji Castle is considered to be among the greatest standing examples of Japanese castle architecture. Among many other eerie folklores, the most popular legend revolves around Okiku. A fabled character from ancient stories, Okiku was wrongly accused of misplacing costly dishes.

As a result, she was executed, and her dead body was thrown into the castle’s well. Her spirit is believed to count the dishes in a sad tone. She screams when she reaches the count of nine before and then goes back into the well.

 

Castle of Good Hope, South Africa

Castle of Good Hope is among the oldest and biggest remaining colonial buildings in South Africa. The castle once had a windowless dungeon where inmates were drowned while chained to its walls.

The ghosts of these inmates haunt the castle. In addition to that, a large black dog jumps at visitors before vanishing. The castle also has a bell that rings by itself – it is said to be rung by the spirit of a guard who committed suicide by hanging himself with the bell rope. Even the lights in the Buren bastion turn on and off by themselves!

 

Bhangarh Fort, India

Bhangarh Fort is an abandoned fort that was built at the foot of the Aravali mountain range in Rajasthan in the 17th century. Some locals believe that a sadhu who stayed on the top of the nearest hill gave permission to build. But he also put a condition that the fort should not cast a shadow on his own house.

After his stipulation was ignored, he put a curse on the whole city. Bhangarh Fort is such a haunted place in India that visitors are not allowed to enter once the sun has set. While several people have experienced paranormal activity in the area surrounding the fort, it is believed that the post-sunset ban was set on visitors in a bid to protect tigers in that area.
