Escapism has been the hallmark of cinema for years; taking us on journeys beyond our imagination from a safe distance and returning us delicately back to our lives. Some of us, choosing more unsettling tales, escape into worlds of gore and ghouls by re-watching a young Georgie’s last moments before floating away, or binging through a series in which our protagonists are too terrified to close their eyes and sleep. If you find yourself among the living that enjoy watching tales of the dead, an immersive art exhibit awaits you on Miracle Mile (and soon traveling to other cities), providing more than an escape, but a tangible experience you have to see, feel, and smell for yourself. I Like Scary Movies, an Instagrammable pop-up for horror fanatics, invites you to jump in – sometimes quite literally – to the twisted playgrounds of infamous monsters and the nightmares where they dwell. Worlds collide as an iconic hotel’s wallpaper bleeds into sewer tunnels of nausea-inducing lights, while hellish landscapes beckon you down twisted paths and into darkened corners. Movie fans throw out quotes as they reenact hanging off a bridge, stick their head through axe-splintered doors, and rise up out of a grave after a certain name is called three times. Each room buzzes with secrets and sensory overloads, as guides remind you that things aren’t always what they seem, and encourage you to please touch the art; you wouldn’t get the full experience otherwise.

Built by a multitude of different artists, this creepy labyrinth has been months in the making, and takes you through five classic horror movies: The Shining, IT (2017), A Nightmare on Elm Street, Beetlejuice and The Lost Boys. Each section of this immersive art exhibit has been meticulously designed with iconic scenes in mind and brought to life through sculptures, lights, characters, and other thematic elements. Some photographable moments and one-of-a-kind features are only attained by those brave enough to venture into dark entrances, sit inside a coffin surrounded by clowns, or stick their head in unsavory places. Certain actions in rooms trigger interesting effects from the pieces, and with an attentive staff, someone is always around to point out the little details one could easily overlook.

A world of pure demonic imagination, I Like Scary Movies succeeds because of the enormity of the sets and characters, which are colorfully displayed in 3D realness; some are even meant to be climbed, moved, and viewed from unique angles. Photo-seekers should constantly be on the lookout, as there isn’t a piece of wall that hasn’t been constructed with the lens of the camera in mind, making it easy to get the perfect shot. Keen observers might wander through just to enjoy the subtle details of their favorite scary films lurking inside each creation.

Beyond inviting guests to become a part of these quintessential horror scenes, the exhibit invites you to add your fear to the Pennywise exhibit wall, jump into a foam pit while in the Beetlejuice waiting room, and touch Freddy Krueger’s sharp blades. Even the most squeamish can enjoy these larger-than-life moments torn straight from the screen – but with no jump scares around the corner. Part of the amusement is just finding the next exhibit in the gallery.

As Instagram-worthy experiences are becoming increasingly popular, I Like Scary Movies sets itself apart by giving the audience a chance to walk a mile in a monster’s shoes. While exploring their dim underworld, one could almost forgive these cinematic villains for their crimes, because who knew that acting evil could be this much fun?
