Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights: 30 Years, 30 Fears

Some people are lulled to sleep by counting sheep. If you are like me, then you can fall asleep to even the loudest of horror films, with chainsaw squeals and the screams of the doomed lulling you into a slumber. Take this kind of chaotic audio and mix it with a bouquet of barbecued meat, funnel cake, and sweat-slicked Florida skin, and you have the sounds and smells of Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights. The sights vary from year to year, but you can usually count on psychotic clowns, ghouls on stilts, blood-soaked cheerleaders, and enough aromatic fog to empty every pore on your body. Now in its thirtieth year in Orlando, Fl, Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights: 30 Years, 30 Fears delivers again on its promises to make you scream or at the very least, delight your senses.

Mazes:

Revenge of the Tooth Fairy:

Narrative and childlike fear and wonder are the keys to making Revenge of the Tooth Fairy a sinister and visceral experience. At the beginning of the maze, you are plopped right into the middle of a whimsical, Victorian children’s pop-up book. The whimsy soon turns to dread as you realize that once the Tooth Fairy is denied, she becomes an enamel-thirsty demon. The storybook becomes a dark and bloody fable, and the unrelenting grinding of dental drills stalks you from room to room. You’ll find yourself with your hand clamped over your mouth, not only to stifle your screams but to protect your tender pearly whites.

Final Thoughts: Excellent sound and set design, well-executed scares, and genuinely terrifying masks make this one of the most unique original mazes in the event’s recent history.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre:

Rank, putrid, and positively dripping with chainsaws, this maze is surprisingly one of the most immersive houses. The penetrating odors of barbecue and gasoline greet you in the Sawyer’s gas station exterior. As you enter the house, a moth ball-miasma sticks to the inside of your nostrils until your eyes start to water. The visual aspect of the maze is also stellar. There are buckets of bones and decay looming in every corner. Soon you’ll feel just like Kirk, Pam, or Jerry, searching for your doomed friends. The 1986 sequel also gets some love, mostly with autocannibalism enthusiast Chop Top. And don’t worry, everyone’s favorite hammer-wielding grandpa gets his time to shine.

Final Thoughts: For some reason, this house was not a big hit with most guests, but I thought it was incredibly immersive. The smells, the sounds, and stellar scare acting put you right inside Tobe Hooper’s revolting classic.

Puppet Theater: Captive Audience

If you are as unnerved by the macabre Melpomene and Thalia masks of Greek theater as I am, then Puppet Theater: Captive Audience may be the thing that pulls your strings so tight, they snap. You will find yourself trapped in time with an Avant-Garde theater troupe and a creepy ballet group from the early 1900s. If macabre disguises are not enough, there is plenty more here to dread, like sinister silhouettes, bloodied and dangling body parts, and a balcony scene that would terrify Shakespeare. There are also plenty of holes in the walls, but as eerie as they are, they are nothing compared to the holes that will be left in your psyche. Your choice is clear: Find a way out of the derelict theater or risk becoming a sad, pathetic prop for these cursed and wretched thespians.

Final Thoughts: Overall, PT is immersive, well designed, and incredibly fun. A bit more staged acting, like the balcony scene, would have been a nice touch to chill our bones.

Beetlejuice:

If you have ever found yourself wanting to exist for a few minutes inside a Tim Burton film, now’s your chance. With a sense of humor as giddily demented as its namesake, The Beetlejuice maze at Orlando is as immersive and nostalgic as it gets. A surreal trip through a neon underworld, the house plays beautiful and macabre homage to one of the most memorable films of many people’s childhoods. From the hilarious corpse-transport zip line to the shrimp-laden dinner party from hell, you may find yourself staring giddily into the spirals on the wall and singing “Day-O” with glee.

Final Thoughts: The maze could have benefitted from more scare actors, as there were plenty of possible positions for them. Still, this house is a feat of high-quality practical effects that bring many of the movie’s key moments to life.

The Wicked Growth: Realm of the Pumpkin

Wicked Growth: Realm of the Pumpkin King takes advantage of our love for all things Halloween and daringly implies that this may be our last. The maze welcomes you to a version of 1950s Carey, Ohio, that is saturated in the evil orange of a possessed town. The countryside is being slowly taken over by The Pumpkin Lord, and you have a front-row seat to the destruction. Jack-o-lanterns, goblins, witches, gnarled minions are here to lead you down a path to the Pumpkin Lord himself. At one point, you will be surrounded by the stringy texture of pumpkin guts and find yourself questioning if you are still in the maze. By the end of your journey, you come to the realization that there’s nothing so wicked as nature, herself.

Final Thoughts: This is one of the best-designed Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights houses that I have ever been in. Walking into Gramalkin’s hut made me feel like Gretel, stepping into the witch’s cottage. Any pumpkin carving maestros will love the texture of this house and have a real good time.

Hill House:

The Haunting of Hill House maze attempts to surround you in an ambiance of death and terror, and it’s got the jump scares to succeed. With ghosts aplenty and a sanguine-lit exterior that would twist The Bent-Neck Lady’s spine even further, this is the perfect example of what a good adaptation can do. The audio design is a big part of what makes this maze work. The dark and melancholic organ that plays in the house’s exterior prepares you for the dark and tragic tale of the Crain family. Ominous dialogue from the series, sinister busts, and plenty of hanging dummies all help to put you even more into the mindset of the tragic Crain twins.

Final Thoughts: A lot of the IP mazes end up being amazing adaptations, but not scary. Or, they are scary, but not well adapted. This house accomplishes all of these goals. It’s immersive, wonderous, and scary, but also adapts the source material beautifully and strikes a sad and tragic tone that stays with you long after you have left.

HHN Icons: Captured:

Twenty-one years ago, Universal introduced the very first icon of Halloween Horror Nights, Jack the Clown. Since that time, there have been seven more wicked monsters introduced that have prowled Universal’s streets in search of innocents. Icons: Captured depicts all eight mega villains contained inside Fear’s lantern and having carved out their own space within. This house is filled with HHN nostalgia and fan service galore. It’s a four-minute trip down memory lane that is sure to please even newcomers to the Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights experience. There’s something for everyone here, whether you suffer from gerontophobia (The Storyteller), or even scopophobia (The Director), there is surely something to make your skin crawl.

Final Thoughts: Even though the importance of celebrating all the different icons on a special anniversary, it’s worth wondering if the scares would have been more effective had the maze stuck with an overall theme from one particular icon.

Scare Zones:

Universal Studios Orlando - Halloween Horror Nights - 2021 Mazes - Theme Park

30 Years/30 Fears:

Located in The Plaza of the Stars, this is the first zone that greets guest as they pour into the park. This year, the zone is designed as an anniversary celebration. It’s a toast to the various characters of Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights’s past. You will find ghoulish stilt walkers and perhaps get lucky with an appearance by one of the main icons (though I did not). Despite great character design and dynamic anniversary signage, newer Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights goers may find themselves confused as to the overall theme here.

Lights, Camera, Hacktion! Eddie’s Revenge:

LCH serves two purposes: it’s not only meant to serve as a sequel to 2009’s LCH zone, but it also serves as homage to favorite characters from other hit scare zones over the years. It’s wonderful to experience a variety of the best characters in the event’s history (lookin at you, Vampire Ice Cream Man). Though, I cannot help but feel like along with 30 Years, these zones only cater to a select group of older folks who have been coming to the event every single year since its inception in 1991.

Crypt TV:

Another grisly albeit puzzling addition to the scare zone list is Crypt TV. Anyone unfamiliar with Jack Davis and Eli Roth’s anthology series, might find themselves wondering as to the origin of this macabre miscellany. That’s not to say there aren’t gruesome sights to behold here. Monsters like The Birch, Look-See, and Miss Annity are sure to give even the most peaceful, heaviest sleepers a run for their money.

Gorewood Forest:

The Central Park area of Universal Studios is home to some of the spookiest scare zones in Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights history. Its dark corners and dense foliage make it the perfect setting for nature-themed horror that takes a hold of you like evil roots. For the thirtieth anniversary year, the creators decided to showcase Terra Cruentus, a fictional land from the 2005 event. The Terra Queen greets you at the front to warn you of the dangers to come. Beautifully done, the zone winks at the past, while keeping with an overall theme, so even event virgins will have no trouble being immersed.

Search & Destroy:

By far the best scare zone of 2021, and one of the best in recent years, Search and Destroy makes creative and striking use of Covid-safety protocols. Led by The Controller, alien minions prowl the streets of New York City in search of human bodies. Your choice is to kneel before The Controller (a cyborg with a skin mask that would make Hannibal Lecter jealous), or risk being transformed into fuel for their ships. The level of interaction is here is stellar. From the multiple opportunities the actors give you to kneel and pledge loyalty, to being able to interact with the alien overlord on a massive digital screen, this is the kind of visceral experience that we come to Universal Studios Orlando Halloween Horror Nights for.

Final Thoughts:

Understandably, the insertion of masks, extra staging, and plexiglass has added layers in between actor and guest, so that exhilarating close contact is missing. Regardless, Michael Aeillo, Charles Gray, and countless others have still delivered the chaos we crave. All five senses are still stimulated, and the dopamine and serotonin still flood our brains. It’s a shock to the system that we welcome, every year, with open arms to open new pathways in our subconscious. After the night ends, and you return home, all those sights, smells and sounds come back with you. As you lie in bed, all that stimuli swirls around in your brain like a beautiful Opera of Anguish. Soon you drift off to a deep sleep, dreaming of more beautiful nightmares. But you will have to wait one more year for them to come true.
