The Hallows of Greentree Asks The Mirror for Halloween Fun

Wait for the thunder, he said. Then the mirror may speak to you. I am huddled close to the entrance to the cemetery, waiting for the signal. Fog rolls across the grass, catching the light and holding it deep within its vapors. A brilliant blue, an ominous green—and then it’s illuminated by light and followed by the rolling clap of thunder. This is it, I think as I make my way through the cemetery. I pass gorgeous tombstones, rising up from the earth, aged by time; I pass a massive mausoleum, lit vermillion from unseen forces hidden within, I pass the doors to a chamber and find myself in a small room, lit only by lanterns—and an ornate mirror hangs on the wall in front. A face I recognize from childhood stares back at me, and it asks, “Have you come here for candy, or for wisdom?” The Hallows of Greentree is a family friendly Halloween Display with walk-through component in Irvine, CA.

The Hallows of Greentree is a family-friendly blend of yard display, walkthrough experience, and interactive storytelling in Irvine, CA. While from the outside, it may appear as a gorgeous graveyard, complete with cemetery gates, perfect fog and lighting, and deep recessed chambers, if you’re willing, you will be invited to uncover the secret of the Hallows of Greentree. At roughly five minutes, the general flow is a walk through the cemetery, a small conversation with a mirror, and then two small rooms decorated beautifully, before letting you back out on the driveway. The experience is only themed spooky, but is completely friendly to kids, with no jump scares, and only a few awe-inspiring moments to leave kids—and adults—thoroughly impressed by this experience.

If you haven’t guessed by now, the surprise is that the mirror, mirror on the wall is that very same one from the movie Snow White—and now it is your turn to ask who’s the fairest of them all—oh, no wait, you’re actually asking for candy or for wisdom. We—of course—asked for candy, and with a bit of magic and a poof of smoke, the candy magically appeared in an ornate bowl in front of the mirror. If you ask for wisdom, well, we are unsure what will happen. So please go and leave us a comment letting us know the outcome.

Upon leaving the mirror, guests step through two more rooms: the first being a dark room occupied only by a swirling laser that mimics the effect of being transported across dimensions; and a second cavernous hallway filled with fake cobwebs and two massive spiders. As there are no actors in these rooms, they are only themed as spooky, and not fully scary, allowing even the smallest of kids to enter and experience this Halloween treat. On the night we attended, we saw a line of children all aged from four to ten, some apprehensive, but others bursting with excitement to go through.

We applaud this experience for taking what could have been just a yard display and not only elevating it with some small walkthrough sections, but by adding some interaction and engagement to create something meaningful and memorable for the kids that come by on Halloween night and the evenings surrounding it. The mirror is a blast and insanely funny, offering some great one lines that are kid friendly—and some even funnier lines for adult-only groups. Watching a character inspired by Disney cuss left me laughing far after I left the experience.

Ultimately, The Hallows of Greentree is a fantastic experience, showcasing their strength in lighting, fog, set decoration, and engagement. It’s an incredibly fun time and perfect for kids. These are exactly the kind of experiences that I loved growing up—and even as an adult, this was so much fun. The versatility in acting, shifting from kid to adult, is great. Make sure you see this one, especially if you have kids, because who knows, you may be the fairest one after all.
