Scream in the Dark 2019 Home Haunt – Fear From All Sides
The pathway narrows once more and makes an abrupt 180-degree turn as I twist myself sideways to move between the walls. There is a blood-curdling scream from above me and the lights flash on a twisted figure hanging above me, dangling from the ceiling, its face contorted in an evil grimace. I look up, startled, and that’s when someone leaps at me from the darkness. scream in the dark 2019
Scream in the Dark is a home haunt in Lake Forest that began as a yard display 15 years ago. Three years ago, it became a massive, 2,000 square foot maze that literally covers the entire property. Those who enter inside the haunt will experience over 10 minutes of scares before they find their way out again.
The name is appropriate for this haunt, as there are plenty of moments in which brave adventurers will find themselves in the dark and – yes – screaming. This is an experience that packs its frights as deeply as it can manage within its space. Using everything from store-bought figures (including zombies, ghouls, ghosts and even the girl from The Exorcist) to double jump-scares from energetic actors, Scream in the Dark generates a chaotic blend of fright moments that work well overall.
The most impressive thing about the maze is how it gets more intense as it progresses. The first few rooms are still like that original, largely static display. As participants move through into successive rooms, however, the scares get larger and more impressive until audiences are literally scared out of the exit by costumed actors. It’s a clever way to build a haunt that transforms typical haunt themes into something more sinister.
Scream in the Dark does exactly what people want a home haunt to do. It scares those who step inside it with effective jump-scares, gruesome creatures, and enough dark moments to make nearly any participant skittish. It’s fun, scary, and absolutely worth a stop if you’re in the Lake Forest area.
Scream in the Dark has concluded its run, but you can find more information on their Facebook page. Check out our Event Guide for more Halloween and immersive entertainment throughout the year.
