MiCRO Lab Madness is the Zenith of Prism’s Haunted Houses

Prism is a former Mission Viejo home haunt that impressed us year after year but their shear quality, innovative, and technology. When other haunts closed during Covid, Prism created a socially distant haunt in their front yard, in which an AI helps bring the nightmares of a young girl to life—with three-dimensional video projected across the entirety of the home, laser effects, and plenty of mechanical effects to create scares. In 2021, the city of Mission Viejo imposed red tape and regulation on the haunted house, forcing them to scale back some of the technology and projection mapping—creating a smaller and shorter haunt. Prism returns better than ever with MiCRO Lab Madness.

But this year, Prism has broken free of the limitations of a home haunt with MiCRO Lab Madness and has taken residence in a former Sears, alongside of another fantastic haunt: Hauntington Beach Manor (see our review here). This walkthrough haunted house combines a strong theatrical narrative with plenty of jump scares, to create a haunted house that impresses beyond that of the standard Knott’s or Halloween Horror Nights mazes. You have a mission—and it cannot be completed without you.

Dr. Sanguine’s Sinister Laboratory is back—and an experiment has gone terribly wrong. Participants will need to enter the laboratory and traverse the labs to reboot the AI and find the antidote. If this is completed, the antidote can be aerosolized, dispersed, and the monsters will turn back into humans. But if this mission fails, the virus may infect more than just this lab, and well, Prism will be a worldwide haunted house.

The costuming and characters in Prism’s MiCRO Lab Madness don’t change much from year to year, but they are more impressive than the costumes you’ll find at 99% of other haunts. Silicone masked demons, armored sentries with a glowing red eye, hazard suited scientists, and trypophobia-inducing masked doctors—the costumes are a highlight and if Prism ever offered a lights on tour, I would love to see all these characters up close.

Beyond just the masks, the décor and set dressing of MiCRO Lab Madness feels fully immersive—leaving no hints of the mall remaining. Their design is distinct and could be recognized anywhere: glowing green barrels, chain-link fences, toxic ooze, wires, exhaust ducts, and computer screens. The AI comes to life, speaking over its speakers, commanding you to complete your mission across multiple rooms. Hallways are fog filled, with lights bleeding through the fog, creating awe-inspiring visuals that will stick with you for days.

With what feels to be close to fifteen to twenty actors across Prism’s MiCRO Lab Madness, monsters are coming at you from all sides—yes, even from above. They hide among ducts, false walls, and behind barrels, waiting for the perfect moment to scare you. But there aren’t just monsters; some actors are friendly, pushing you forward. A memorable interaction is the snarky and sassy armorer, with guns laid out in front of him, ready to prepare you for your mission. He’ll nickname you boundary-pushing names (e.g., knock-off Megan Fox, and “just joe”), as he tells you you’ll get out “just in time to get one of those adult happy meals from McDonalds.” You can never take yourself too seriously, and I love the juxtaposition of humor and horror together.

Prism’s MiCRO Lab Madness has brought back everything we loved about the prior years of their haunt. It’s engaging, it’s interactive, it’s funny, it’s gorgeous, and it’s frightening. Creator David Fefferman has finally been given the opportunity to bring the full vision of Prism to life—and this is the best version of Prism. You have to attend this haunt—the fate of the world hangs in your hands.
