Upside-down crosses hover in the air over the church pews. I dodge them as I make my way down the aisle. An altar rests at the front, bathed in a beautiful red light—but I can’t quite see what’s on it. I decide to move closer. Various clergy fill the pews—yet, I turn to see one of the nuns, and her face has lost its color, black pouring forth from her eyes. I quickly make my way to the front, and I notice another oddity, the patrons in the front row have… horns. I’m now at the front—and I can see the alter. It’s a human body—female—and she’s covered in stab wounds. The blood is old, dried—she’s been dead awhile. Then the church door swings open and a man steps forth. Massive in size, with hooves, and large horns—I may be the next sacrifice. Manor of Fears 2021 is a home haunt that is built by haunters with a lot of passion for what they do.

Manor of Fears is a home haunt in Apple Valley that feels more like a professional haunt with a massive footprint. Lasting fifteen to twenty minutes, this haunted house takes guests in multiple structures, with long stretches of exterior areas to explore. It is linear in structure, with actors emerging from hidden areas and directly engaging audiences to elicit scares. There is no contact here—it’s a traditional haunt, and a damn good one at that.

Incorporating themes from your favorite films, this is the closest you’ll get to Knott’s Scary Farm taking on Halloween Horror Night’s Intellectual Property. As such, audiences will step into rooms inspired from Saw, The Purge, Silent Hill, The Exorcist, and The Walking Dead franchises. This creates a sense of familiarity and recognition that allows the scares to already have some weight. The pig-masked killer is scarier right after seeing Billy the Puppet riding his token tricycle in the previous hallway.

The actors are enthusiastic and a blast to interact with. Most are teenagers or young adults, providing youthful energy and passion that is clearly on display here. In a room filled with large clown dummies, I wandered in to take a picture of the set up. Little did I know, a clown had emerged from his brethren and waited just behind me to take my picture and turn—as he created a perfect scare. I screamed and laughed—and we both celebrated his success in fear.

Due to its location, this haunted house has more space than your average Los Angeles based maze. The haunt utilizes interior locations to create claustrophobic and tight corridor scares, then transitions into expansive outdoor spaces where you feel unsafe, as scares come from anywhere with actors emerging from distance running towards you. As such, the dynamic use of scares works great, always shifting the horror when you start to feel like you understand the Manor of Fears 2021.

Manor of Fears is a non-profit, using it’s 10-dollar admission price for charity with The Ana Mendoza Foundation. A single mother of five, Ana Mendoza passed away in 2017—and now her children continue her hardworking legacy in this haunt. They use the money collected for toys, food, clothes, and books for the needy during Christmastime. It’s Manor of Fears’ way of giving back, providing others with the joy and hope that their mother provided them.

Manor of Fears 2021 is a haunted house that brings your favorite films to life, using its massive location to create expansive sets that Knott’s Scary Farm would be jealous of. With passionate actors who aren’t afraid to be active in their roles, the scares here shift from in-your-face fear to scares that build as you see the horrors in the distance—knowing you have to move closer. Do yourself a favor, and check in at the Manor of Fear 2021, it’s for a good cause.

While Apple Valley can be a drive from Los Angeles or Vegas, this haunted house can be combined with All Saints Lunatic Asylum and High Desert Haunted House, also in Apple Valley. Fear Farm Phelan is close by as well, allowing this to be a fantastic night of some of the best haunt experiences.
