Insane Haunt Productions’ The Cabin Invites Us to Witness A Snowy Massacre

Cameron McGuinness, aged 19, is another haunt protégé. Much like Jacob Larson of Pirate’s Cave, Sam Kellman of Opechee, Mason Legerski of Corona Haunt, Zion Fenwick of Twisted, among others, McGuinness has been creating haunted houses out of his front yard and garage for the past six years, A far leap from his very first maze  in which he dressed up as a scarecrow among a makeshift cornfield, his company, Insane Haunt Productions, has brought to life an impressive haunted house that could easily pass for a Knott’s Scary Farm maze (where he actually works). Insane Haunt Productions’ The Cabin is a home haunt in Santa Clarita.

Now that scarecrow costume sits upon a couch in Insane Haunt Productions’ The Cabin, his sixth haunted house, is a six-room linear walk through with actors, weather effects, a narrative through-line, and some clever Easter Eggs from prior year’s haunts. Flipping the script on 2020’s Candy Shop haunt, in which the kids turned on the candy shop owner, Insane Haunt Productions’ The Cabin finds a demented cabin owner turning violent against the party-goers who have rented—and trashed—his titular cabin.

While Insane Haunt Productions’ The Cabin is only six or so minutes, the sets range drastically, as guests traverse the snow-covered trees outside—all from a real snow machine—to the warm insides of a cabin ravaged by a true rager. Here, haunt goers will find a secret passage into a hidden chamber of the killer, and then back into the woods to the final scene in the shed where you come face to face with the cabin owner. Each room is decorated beautifully too, with massive evergreens extending into the roof above, a campfire burning bright outside, and a fully decked out murder shed with great Easter Eggs.

While these Easter Eggs may be lost on those who are not die-hard Insane Haunt Production fans, they are a nice way for McGuinness to stay connected to his past. As he proudly guides us through the haunt, he points out a gumball machine on a shelf used in Candy shop in 2020, a giant pirate banner hidden behind the entrance from his pirate-themed adventure in 2019, an electrical box used in Unlucky Lab from 2018, to a light switch that he obtained from Opechee haunt. His passion was on clear display here, with a clear remembrance of the haunts his creativity was born in.

As Insane Haunt Productions’ The Cabin only has one actor—the murderous cabin owner—it mainly relies on sound design and effects to create the scares. This worked great too because these effects were much harder to anticipate compared to finding a hiding place of an actor. As screams echoed through the woods, the blood of a girl splashes us from above, creating a great scare (don’t worry, it was just water). Sneaking through the innards of the cabin releases some air blasters to startle us perfectly. And while the snow was not frightening in the slightest—it sets the tone: a somber cabin isolated from civilization in which no one can hear you scream.

Ultimately, Insane Haunt Productions’ The Cabin is an fantastically themed, gorgeously decorated, and frightening journey into a cabin haunted by a serial killer. McGuinness and team are showing that they can produce experiences that are consistently of high quality and worth seeking out. We’re really excited to see what the future brings to this great company.
