More on Apartment 213

Apartment 213 debuted at ScareLA in 2017 to a warm and welcomed reception. To quote our own review:

“It is a rare but pleasant experience to be as impressed by something in such a short amount of time as I was by the 3-4 minutes it took me to experience the ScareLA sample of Apartment 213. It was a refreshing, emotionally-driven, and sophisticatedly-designed take on the haunt genre that far exceeded my expectations. And while I have very little doubt that the full-length show premiering this haunt season will ratchet up the physical intensity and earn the “extreme” title that we’ve seen employed in the marketing, I am of the utmost confidence that all extremity will be employed in service of a fantastic theatrical experience first and foremost, rather than as a gimmick or badge of honor for participants to simply “survive”.”

However, when September 1st and 2nd, 2017 arrived, the 30 minute pop-up experience that Apartment 213 promised was lackluster. The combination of a weak narrative, a lack of theatrics, and mainly yelling from actors prevented this experience from living up to its ScareLA potential. Further, the immersive community spoke up of safety concerns over blindfolded patrons on stairs and actors jumping on beds with guests underneath. The impressive size and caliber of the actors and wonderful set design was unable to save a sour response from the community.

With the pop-up complete, they opened their doors in October to the Halloween audience. With an improved narrative and fixed safety issues, the show was received better, but was still unable to recapture the market demand. With so much else to experience in Halloween, Apartment 213 disappeared with the autumn leaves.
