Halfway to Halloween: 8 Spookiest Movies of the Year
The horror genre in movies has its own set of fans worldwide. For die-hard enthusiasts, even the scariest flick isn’t frightening enough. The genre’s cinema keeps people guessing. They never know just what is in store for them. It could be anything: a low-quality film, one that makes them sleep, or one that gives them the chills every time they find themselves alone.
The scariest movies have an eerie, tense atmosphere with a plot that keeps people gripped to their seats. However, today, the landscape of these films can seem confusing to many. Choosing a great one to watch can seem like a lengthy task.
But now you needn’t worry about that. We have compiled a list of 8 movies that are sure to frighten the bejeebers out of you. Let’s begin.
1. StopMotion
Stopmotion is one of those films that will linger in your minds long after watching. Directed by Robert Morgan, the movie is filled with phenomenal performances and stunning cinematography. The film’s animation is what takes it to another level.
Stop Motion revolves around Ella Blake, an animator who works under her dominant mother, Suzanne Blake. Suzanne’s arthritic condition makes her order her daughter around both for work and non-work-related purposes.
Soon, Suzanne suffers a stroke, making her land in the hospital. She is unable to finish the movie she’s working on, and the task falls on Ella. The girl moves into another apartment and meets a little girl as her neighbor. The girl wants to know what Else does. Soon, Ella starts working on the ideas of the girl. However, these ideas are not normal. They are strange and frightening. Equally frightening are the visions Ella soon begins to get after she starts working on them.
Stopmotion is a movie filled with grisly elements. The director’s unique approach to horror is evident. This, combined with the stellar performances of the actor, makes it a must-watch for every fan of this genre.
2. Lisa Frankenstein
Lisa Frankenstein will appeal to the fans of ‘weird girl’ films. For some time now, there has been a lot of dilution in this sphere. From the times of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the genre has been popular among the fans of macabre. But not many films using the weird girl genre have been able to make their mark.
Lisa Frankenstein, though, is different. Lisa Swallows, a high-school misfit, is cast out by her friends for her gothic habits. Her mother is murdered, and the father quickly remarries. The Swallows family gets expanded with Taffy, Lisa’s step-sister and stepmother. The rest of the movie revolves around Lisa navigating her high school life.
Where the movie actually shines, though, is when Lisa finds her first real friend, Cole Sprouse. He is resurrected from a bachelor pianist’s grave. Soon, all that Lisa wants is to somehow give this corpse a life. The movie has a yesteryear vibe. The cinematography is well-defined with creative usage of lighting. Essentially, Lisa tries to reanimate a corpse and make him perfect in every way. This plot seems both silly and horrific at the same time.
3. Night Swim
Night Swim is Bryce McGuire’s attempt at producing a frightening full-length feature film. After watching the film, we are impressed with his efforts. A family moves into a new apartment but soon finds out something eerily wrong with the pool in their backyard.
Based on a short film by the same name, McGuire manages to make this movie with a haunted swimming pool, an exciting watch. The story has many interesting elements. For example, the father who suffers from MS spends time at the pool and begins to recover from the condition. The children sense an eerie presence around the pool. The mother is the first one who becomes uneasy with it.
We are impressed with how McGuire has just taken the premise of the pool and kept the story engaging. The movie stimulates our primeval fear of water to give an entertaining watch.
4. Immaculate
Immaculate is a brutally intense religious horror that is definitely not for the faint-hearted. A desperate young man tries to escape an Italian convent. This is also the climax of the movie. The entire film echoes the bone-breaking nunsploitation movies of the 1970s.
The film’s first two acts are filled with startling cuts and jump scares. The director knows exactly how to proceed with the film with brutal efficiency. The story follows the plot of a young man from Michigan who moves to an Italian convent. Here, she bonds with Gwen, another young girl.
Soon, she gets disturbing visions at night. This movie becomes even more interesting when Cecilia suddenly becomes pregnant. The deceptively straightforward horror movie will entangle you in its grasp even without you realizing it.
5. The First Omen
The First Omen is an installment of the dormant Omen film franchise. Installments do not particularly do well. But The First Omen is wonderfully different.
A prequel to the 1976 movie, the film is wickedly chilling. Margaret Daino, a young novitiate, came to Rome in 1971. She is called by Cardinal Lawrence, who ran the orphanage she grew up in. Margaret is assigned to the Vizzardeli Orphanage.
Here, she meets Carlita, a troubled young girl. Margaret bonds well with the girl but isn’t able to reach her well. The evil turn in the story comes with Margaret being approached by Brennan, the disgraced Father. He wants her to stay away from Carlita as horrific things will happen around her.
This proves to be true, and the rest of the film is all about the grisly horror that ensues. This film has the potential to be counted among the best Omen films since its original release.
6. Late Night With the Devil
Late Night With the Devil is unlike the usual horror films. Jack Delroy is a slightly deluded but well-meaning host who tries hard to keep his show on air. The show has a nostalgic 70s vibe to it. This is evident in pretty much everything, from the lighting to the graphics, and more.
Delroy plans a scary Halloween episode to appease their audience. Dr. June Ross-Mitchell, a parapsychologist, is invited. She dives into the subject of her new book, which is about a girl named Lily.
The girl claims to be possessed by a demon. Delroy asks June to invite the evil entity possessing Lilly on the television. It’s exactly here that things become messy.
The Late Night With the Devil is a classic blend of subtle humor and horror. The unique horror flick is meticulously made, making it worthy to be watched again and again.
7. In A Violent Nature
The perfect flick for slasher fans, In A Violent Nature is scary, suspenseful, and funny albeit not in equal measures. The movie is devoid of any music. This makes it ultra-realistic.
Johnny is resurrected by a character’s theft of a precious family artifact. He goes all out to retrieve it. Johnny is ready to kill anyone who gets in his way as he walks incoherently among the miles of forest trails in real-time.
The film is filled with creatively gruesome kills. The cinematography is immersive and beautiful. If you like movies with minimal and necessary dialogue, you will love this film. The kill scenes are incredible and hard to watch until the end.
Overall, it’s a unique slasher film in terms of storytelling, film-making, and the art of cinematography.
8. I Saw the TV Glow
I Saw the TV Glow revolves around the premise of two outcast teenagers. These include Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine. They bond over their love for a television show that airs late at night.
However, the show is mysteriously canceled. This film beautifully depicts the feeling of homesickness that viewers addicted to a show feel when they cannot watch it.
The plot is set in the 1990s. The director of the film recreated the look and feel of the popular programs during this time quite well.
The TV show shows a vision of this supernatural world beneath the human world. As the movie progresses and the teenagers watch the show, their view of reality starts breaking.
The film is an intersection of reality and media. Its striking and creative visions add to its appeal.
Streaming Your Favorite Horror Movie at Home
Whether gory and macabre, or silly and irreverent, the horror genre is rich and varied. Do you plan to enjoy spine-chilling movies in the comfort of your bedroom? It’s easier than ever!
Choose a reliable streaming service such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, or Shudder, which offers an enormous collection of horror flicks. You can further enhance your experience with streaming devices like FireStick, Roku, or Chromecast to watch on your TV.
In recent years, IPTV services have gained popularity as the preferred medium to stream entertainment at home. IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) services deliver television content over the internet. They offer users greater flexibility, more channels, and on-demand content that they can access on various devices like smart TVs, smartphones, and tablets. More people use IPTV services because they provide a cost-effective alternative to cable, often without long-term contracts.
Many IPTV services have native apps for devices like FireStick, Android TV Box, and iPhone. However, not all IPTV providers offer dedicated apps for streaming, often relying on IPTV players instead. An IPTV player allows you to stream content through your IPTV subscription, managing all your service subscriptions in one place.
Several great IPTV players include IPTV Smarters, Flix IPTV, and Tivimate IPTV Player. These players support multiple URL formats and offer user-friendly interfaces. Tivimate IPTV Player is particularly versatile, supporting various IPTV services and playlists. It also integrates with the Electronic Program Guide (EPG), providing detailed TV program schedules and enhancing the user experience.
Greatest Horror Movies Ever Made
From demonic possessions to haunted mansions, horror movies have their own special place in the history of cinema. However, few films have been able to scare the audience the most and have established their position as the spookiest movies of all time. Horror movies like The Exorcist (1973), Hereditary (2018), The Conjuring (2013), The Shining (1980), and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) have established themselves as classics. This is majorly due to their unique and enduring ability to terrify audiences.
The Exorcist shocked viewers with its frightening portrayal of demonic possession, while Hereditary disturbed with its exploration of grief and supernatural elements. The Conjuring successfully struck an emotional connection with the audience. Another movie worth mentioning is The Shining. It excelled as a psychological thriller, delving into the human psyche’s dark corners. These films have each set significant milestones in the evolution of horror. They never disappoint those who want a really good scare, no matter the time of the day!
Summing up
2024 is set to be an exciting year for fans of horror movies. Whether you prefer something spooky or mixed with a pinch of humor and comedy, the films won’t disappoint. In the latter part of the year, another set of movies will be released. Suffice to say that there’s more than enough options for everyone. So, dim the lights, grab your favorite snack, and get ready for a chilling experience.
