Gremlins Fan Tribute – A Welcome Home Haunt for the Holidays – VIDEO

A woman answers the ringing phone and suddenly looks terrified. “What did you say?” she asks just before her eyes get gigantic. She’s looking past me, behind me. That’s when I hear a very familiar hiss. There’s a gremlin right over my shoulder. gremlins

Twisted Minds ProductionsGremlins Fan Tribute Haunted House is a home haunt designed to scare audiences during the Christmas season, which makes sense given that the film it pays tribute to, Gremlins, is also set at Christmas. Small audience groups of up to about four travel through the experience, which begins at the Chinatown shop where Gizmo was first bought and then spins into a combination of highlights from the movie and original moments inspired by other movie scenes. The combination of the two aspects makes this a fun and enjoyable, free neighborhood-style scare experience.

From the beginning, the Gremlins Fan Tribute shows off some inspired props and moments. The opening room acts as the curio store where the father buys Gizmo, and if you look around closely enough, you can indeed find the little furry creature poking his head out of his box. It sets the stage just right for the rest of the haunt.

Once audiences enter the real haunt, however, things take an interesting turn. Instead of simply following the story with a recreation of scenes from the movie, Gremlins Fan Tribute chooses to highlight specific moments of the movie (such as a blender with half of a gremlin still sticking out of its blades) while adding its own unique moments (such as jump-scares or characters trying to help participants escape). This mashup is a good idea because it means that audiences cannot be certain exactly what’s going to happen next, or where the next scare will come from.

This intentional choice to veer away from the movie’s plotline is put to very good use in the latter half of the haunt. Participants are moved quickly through the space and placed into a finale that has a surprising twist, utilizing a pretty sophisticated movement of sound between two sets of speakers, as well as some water effects if a participant ends up in the right spot.

Could this haunt have used more space to increase its complexity or more actors to create a stronger set of scares? Certainly. But this haunt has clearly been designed to be a neighborhood event built out of passion and love for both the movie Gremlins and the idea of a good haunt. Neighbors stand outside the event offering gingerbread cookies and hot chocolate. Another member of the team offers pictures with a puppet Gizmo after the haunt is over. Her sincere joy at taking guests’ photos means that almost everyone chooses to have their picture taken with the furry fan favorite – and not for social media either, as she takes the photo with the guest’s phone, allowing them to have the souvenir instead of adding it to some Instagram account as so many other haunts do. The scares are set at an appropriate level for a home haunt; the 10-year-olds in line behind me enjoyed the haunt just as much as I did. Everything shows that the Twisted Minds team cares a great deal about making  quality events that the entire family can enjoy together.

The Gremlins Fan Tribute Haunted House has everything that a haunt lover could want. There are scares. There are calls to the original Gremlins franchise. There are surprises. Most of all, there is a lot of passion for the beloved franchise. What more could you ask for at Christmas than to have gremlins terrify you in a way that exactly mirrors the gleeful joy of the movie that is the haunt’s inspiration? I have seen haunts that are bigger and haunts that are more polished. But this haunt has heart and truly is a love letter to the original movie. I sincerely hope they bring this haunt back again next year, because Los Angeles can use a darker holiday tradition like this tribute. I will certainly be back if they do.

The Gremlins Fan Tribute has concluded its one-weekend run. Find out more information on Twisted Minds and their upcoming productions on their website, Instagram, and Facebook page. Check out our Event Guide for more extreme horror events throughout the year.
