Friday the 13th Immersive – Flicks for Fans Gives Guests a Night to Remember

Forty years ago, on a cool May evening, a movie premiered that would not only change the landscape of horror cinema, but horror enthusiasts’ lives everywhere. Nine sequels, a crossover film, a reboot, 16 novels, numerous comic books, and countless fan films later, Friday the 13th, Jason Voorhees, and a certain hockey mask have been ingrained into the pop culture psyche of the world. friday the 13th immersive

What better way to celebrate this killer franchise than by throwing an amazing 40th anniversary, immersive fan screening by Flicks for Fans at the Fine Arts Theatre in Beverly Hills? Flicks for Fans is run by Jason Coleman and Jimmy Oster (better known as Jimmy O through his work at JoBlo.com and Arrow in the Head). Both Jason and Jimmy love movies, and it certainly shows through their well-executed fan events.

This event, appropriately taking place on Friday the 13th, wasn’t just a movie screening, it was an experience that spanned two days and included an immersive pre-show to get fans excited for the film. The 15-minute pre-show had very small groups of guests walking through beautifully crafted sets to watch live actors reenact scenes from the first two Friday the 13th films. This walk-through experience was a brief summary of the films, and boasted amazing special makeup effects and uncanny performances by the actors – who all looked and sounded like their on-screen counterparts. Crazy Ralph (played by Patrick Coleman Duncan) screaming DOOM! to all who entered the experience was a delight, and the interplay between chipper camp counselor Sam (Anne Ross) and Mark (Christian Albert Farje) before his untimely death-by-machete successfully lightened the mood before Jason (Andrew J. Saldana) – now fully grown and huge! – made his inevitable showstopping appearance. While there was little-to-no touching by the actors, the ambiance and jump-scare climax made for a creepy introduction to the world of Jason Voorhees, and the experience provided a trove of Easter eggs for the sharp-eyed fan.

Overall, the set design and special FX gore-value was phenomenal. The sets (done by the Coleman family) used the small hideaway space behind the theater to its utmost extent. As guests progressed through the narrative, running into various characters from the films, the setting became more dank and industrial, lending an extra layer of spookiness to the experience. The special makeup effects were all created by Brittany Fontaine, a graduate of the Tom Savini Special Effects Makeup School. The decapitated head of Mrs. Voorhees was created from the original casting used by Tom Savini in Friday the 13th Part II. All of the special effects and makeup were amazing.

In addition to the pre-show, Flicks for Fans brought together plenty of merchants selling horror collectibles and paraphernalia, as well as a “deadly” photo op. The first ten guests to the event received a goody bag containing lots of fun candy, posters, and a gift card to Dark Delicacies, the best horror-themed gift shop this side of the Mississippi. Most of the Coleman clan was on hand to warmly greet everyone, including Michael Coleman, whose exuberance for the franchise was palpable (and quite catching). He was eager to point out all of the fun Friday the 13th swag that could be purchased, including a glow-in-the-dark replica of the original poster. There were horror DVDs, Blu-rays, books, and comics for sale, as well (I picked up a wonderful Blu-ray of a personal favorite, Psychomania, for a song). Michael also pointed out two original Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th Part II posters that were being raffled off. There was also the Kevin Bacon kill cabin set that had been recreated in the lobby, including an attachable arrow-through-the-neck prop. It made for a great photo op, and was spot-on to the movie.

The incredible pre-show and fun merch successfully primed the audience for the main event of the evening: to watch Friday the 13th on the big screen. Flicks for Fans highlighted the film’s decade with era-appropriate advertisements and horror movie trailers (most of which looked amazingly terrible), curated by projectionist Martin Spencer. Jimmy O introduced the movie by asking trivia questions with some amazing prizes: Camp Crystal Lake journals, documentaries about the franchise, and copies of all of the Friday the 13th films. The film itself looked and sounded amazing on the big screen, with a lively audience to enjoy it with. Once the film ended and the raffle prizes handed out, they screened another horror classic, Sleepaway Camp.

While this was my first experience with Flicks for Fans, it will certainly not be my last. It was very uplifting to be surrounded by fellow fans during these uncertain times. Make sure you give the Flicks for Fans Facebook page a like, so you’ll know what spectacular event they have coming up next.
