All Saints Lunatic Asylum | Christmas After Dark

Christmas After Dark – All Saints Lunatic Asylum Welcomes the Holidays

I navigate through tight corners, ambling back and forth, and run into tiny elves in silly costumes scurrying about in the darkness. I can’t help but laugh, not because anything is necessarily funny, but because I’m a big guy and stumbling through tiny corridors inherently makes me laugh nervously. I think that this Asylum I trudge through might douse their walls with laughing gas…so maybe there’s that, too. Nothing screams “Happy Holidays!” more than being chased by Krampus and a creepy elf in the dark. christmas after dark

All Saints Lunatic Asylum | Christmas After Dark

All Saints Lunatic Asylum: Christmas after Dark is the holiday-themed version of the ever popular Apple Valley traditional walk-through haunted house. The 10- to 15-minute maze welcomes small groups of guests (solo participants to groups of around 5-6 people) into an asylum filled with questionable patients and malicious personnel. All Saints’ year-long maze is often re-themed for specific holidays – including Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and of course, Christmas – but always on top of the basic insane asylum foundation. Christmas after Dark is a non-extreme haunt, meaning guests will not be touched, however there are scare-actors ready to interact with guests – both startling and entertaining – while they wait in line for their chance to enter the Asylum, as well as lurking inside the facility’s walls.

While the sets and props of Christmas after Dark keep the same asylum aesthetic as the year-round maze, some holiday props and costumes are sprinkled throughout to give it an extra touch that can only be discovered during the holiday season. For example, some patients within the facility are seeking Santa or an elf which may or may not be all in their head, while others have holiday-specific costumes, like vibrant ornament-style clothing, elf outfits, and Santa and Mrs. Claus costumes. The lobby is also decked out with Christmas decorations – stockings, tinsel, string lights, toys, and gifts – to help waiting guests get in the holiday spirit.

The often minimal lighting design within the Asylum works well to disorient participants. Some rooms are very dark, with only a strand of Christmas lights casting an eerie glow down the never-ending corridors, the shadows hiding any tight corners. The low lighting also compliments the map of the maze, effectively helping haunt-goers get lost among the twists and turns of the Asylum; it’s almost enough to drive someone insane!

The scare-actors of Christmas after Dark are frightening, funny (have you seen the well-endowed Mrs. Claus?), and helpful all at once, and while the actors do not touch the guests, they aren’t afraid to get up close and personal. The performers will follow up an effective jump-scare only to ask if guests can help them find Santa, pleading or following them until the next room. In portions of the maze which are quite dark or confusing, the actors skillfully make a noise or pop out in character to point the way, helping struggling guests get to where they need to go. This interactivity also helps distract guests from upcoming jump-scares which may be waiting for them in the next room.

While the theming does not change dramatically from the year-round event, Christmas after Dark (and All Saints as a whole) does what it sets out to do: It makes guests feel uneasy, makes them laugh, and overall entertains them during their time inside the Asylum. Additionally, beyond the haunted attraction itself, a sense of family is apparent. From the moment guests set foot into the lobby, they feel welcome, making it easy to see why participants return – some even weekly – over and over again for this exhilarating experience.
